Bilateral accessory flexor muscle of the forearm giving rise to a variant head of the first lumbrical

چکیده
Introduction Accessory flexor muscles in the forearm were first reported by Gantzer in 1813 [1]. These small accessory muscles typically arise from the medial arm and forearm [2] and the deep surface of the flexor digitorum superficialis [3]. Gantzer muscles insert via thin tendons into the tendon of the flexor pollicis longus, digitorum superficialis, or flexor digitorum profundus [2–4]. Here, we report a bilateral accessory deep flexor in the forearm that originated from the lateral side of the forearm and the tendon bifurcated distally into two branches, one of which was associated with a variant head of the first lumbrical muscle. To our knowledge, this bilateral anatomic variation has not been reported previously.

The accessory heads of the deep flexors of the forearm (Gantzer’s muscles) have been described as two different small bellies which insert either into flexor pollicis longus (FPL) or flexor digitorum profundus (FDP) [1]. It is not surprising to find that there are many variations in the manner in which the FPL and the FDP are combined, because both have a common phylogenic derivation from the p...
متن کاملAccessory Flexor Carpi Ulnaris and Bilaterally Variant Vascular Anatomy of Upper Limb: An Unusual Presentation
We report a rare combination of variations in the upper limb of a human cadaver. Accessory flexor carpi ulnaris with absent palmaris longus was observed in the left forearm during routine dissection of a male cadaver. Variant vascular pattern was observed bilaterally. Brachial artery bifurcated at a higher level. Ulnar artery gave rise to persistent median artery (PMA) which pierced the median ...
متن کاملAccessory muscle in the forearm: a clinical and embryological approach
Muscular variations of the flexor compartment of forearm are usual and can result in multiple clinical conditions limiting the functions of forearm and hand. The variations of the muscles, especially accessory muscles may simulate soft tissue tumors and can result in nerve compressions. During a routine dissection of the anterior region of the forearm and hand, an unusual muscle was observed on...

During the evolution from the lower animals to man, the upper limbs have acquired a great mobility, but at the cost of their stability. The reverse is true for the lower limbs. The muscular anomalies which are common in the upper limbs are largely explainable on a phylogenetic basis. The same is true for the vascular anomalies. However, such anomalies are usually seen singly and they are never ...
متن کاملVariant third and fourth lumbrical muscles of the left hand
Introduction Most humans have four lumbrical muscles in each hand numbered as first, second, third and fourth from the radial to ulnar side. Lumbrical muscles of the hand flex the second to fifth metacarpophalangeal joints and extend the interphalangeal joints of the fingers [1, 2]. The first and second lumbrical muscles originate from the radial side of the flexor digitorum profundus (FDP) ten...
